What India's young consumers expect from brands, and why businesses need to balance quality, affordability and trust.

Gen Z is not simply looking for cheaper products. It wants products that deliver on their promises, offer clear value and justify the money spent. For brands, the challenge is not just setting the right price. It is making consumers feel that the product is worth buying.

Gen Z Is Changing What Value Means

For a long time, brands have tried to attract young consumers through discounts, attractive packaging, celebrity endorsements and social media campaigns. These tactics may bring attention, but they do not always convince consumers to buy.

At Electroyuva, we believe that the way young consumers evaluate products is becoming more demanding. They want good quality, but they also want to know whether the product is worth the money. This creates a challenge for brands. A product may be attractive, well-designed and supported by strong marketing, but if consumers feel that its price is too high for the benefits it offers, they may choose another option. The shift is important because Gen Z is becoming an increasingly influential consumer group in India. Its buying decisions are shaped by a combination of affordability, product performance, personal research and trust. For businesses, the question is no longer simply how to make products attractive to young consumers. It is how to make them worth paying for.

What the Research Tells Us

A September 2026 study by Rukam Capital, conducted in collaboration with YouGov, provides useful insights into how India's Gen Z consumers make purchase decisions.

The two-percentage-point difference between quality and price is worth noting. It suggests that businesses cannot assume young consumers will automatically choose a cheaper product or pay more simply because a brand positions itself as premium. Brand transparency is another important expectation. These findings suggest that trust is closely connected to the buying decision. Consumers want to understand what they are purchasing and feel confident that the brand will deliver what it promises. Young consumers are also researching more before buying.

The study found that 46% of respondents said they research more before making a purchase. Only 4% reported purchasing immediately after discovering a product.

This suggests that product discovery does not automatically lead to a sale. Consumers may see a product on social media, but they still want to compare alternatives, check reviews and understand whether the product is worth its price.

What Does This Mean for Businesses?

The findings point towards three important changes in how brands should approach Gen Z.

Electroyuva's Perspective – What Should Businesses Do? At Electroyuva, we believe businesses need to move away from the traditional approach of treating quality and affordability as separate priorities. The real opportunity is to build products that deliver meaningful benefits at a price consumers are comfortable paying.

We believe businesses should focus on four areas.

Winning Gen Z Requires More Than a Low Price

Gen Z is not necessarily looking for the cheapest product in the market. It is looking for a product that delivers what it promises and justifies the money spent. The Rukam Capital–YouGov study highlights this clearly. Quality leads purchase drivers at 51%, but price follows closely at 49%. The findings on transparency and customer experience further show why trust matters in building consumer relationships. For businesses, the message is straightforward: lowering prices may attract attention, but delivering genuine value is what gives consumers a reason to choose a brand.

At Electroyuva, we believe the brands that win Gen Z will not necessarily be the cheapest or the most expensive. They will be the ones that make consumers feel their money was well spent.
